Friday's Ride:

Mountain Cove Ride (Remote Start)

MAPS & CUE SHEET PAGE

The rider's meeting will be held at 12:45 PM in the parking lot of the Lookout Baptist Church at 8645 Highway 193, Chickamauga, Georgia. The remote start is 12.9 miles from The Chattanoogan and you should allow for a 27 minute drive. Directions to the ride from The Chattanoogan are as follows:

1. Head south on Broad St toward W 13th St and travel 2.1 mi
2. Turn left at Tennessee Ave and travel 0.4 mi
3. Slight right at St Elmo Ave, travelling 1.8mi to the Georgia state line
4. Continue on GA-193 for another 0.2 mi
5. Take a slight right at Chattanooga Valley Rd/Old GA-193 and travel 4.8 mi
6. Continue on GA-193 for another 3.6 mi to Lookout Baptist Church which will be on your left.

Riders are encouraged to carpool where possible because: (a) all of the environmental reasons, (b) it's more fun, (c) you're less likely to be late or get lost if you pick the right couple to carpool with, (d) it means there should be at least one other couple waiting for you at the end of the ride, and (e) it reduces the number of cars in the parking lot which has a finite number of parking spaces.

Route Profiles Explained

Even though the name of the ride includes the word "mountain", there are no nasty climbs - unless you elect to ride the King of the Mountain option.  Starting out 13 miles south of Chattanooga, this scenic ride rolls through the Chattanooga Valley with great scenery in the shadow of Lookout Mountain.  In fact, you may be surprised to find the first leg of route to be incredibly flat given the surrounding topography. Snacks and beverages will be available at our Cove Mountain Store rest stop, which is also the turnaround point for the standard route. Your return ride will reward you with even more breath taking views and roads that undulate over the foothills of the Lookout Mountain.

Route Profiles Explained

Note: Teams who are considering this and any other KOM options do so at their own risk. In addition to climbs that place a very high physical demand on the riders, teams are cautioned that the descents also place a high demand on the captain's bike handling skills and a tandem's brake system(s) and tires. Tandems can easily reach speeds that exceed the posted speed limits and teams are responsible for ensuring that their tandem's brake systems -- to include the tires and wheels -- are in good repair and appropriate for their given team weight and descending style. Heavier teams, teams who are predisposed to "ride their brakes" on steep descents, or any other team that has limited alpine riding experience on a tandem should consult with their tandem dealer or more experienced teams to determine if their skills and tandems are both sufficient for long descents of up to 17% gradiants with switchbacks and slower motor vehicle traffic sharing the use of the roads.

For teams that prefer more challenging rides with some knee busting, thigh burning, gut wrenching climbs the optional King of the Mountain (KOM) loop will not disappoint.  After riding in the valley to the Mountain Cove Farms Store you will continue South and head up some steep switchbacks to the top of Lookout Mountain.  Sound like fun?  Good, because now that you are on top of the ridge you still have plenty more climbing to go as the road along the top of the ridge is anything but flat.  However, for those who opt for the KOM route, you'll be rewarded with incredible views and then a refreshingly long descent back into the valley as your return to the remote start.

Social @ 7:30 PM - North Courtyard of The Chattanoogan:

Everyone is invited to meet back at The Chattanoogan Hotel for an outdoor dessert social in the courtyard on the North side of the motor court. The rally organizers will be providing ice cream courtesy of Clumpie's, coffee, water and here's the fun part: YOU get to bring the Cookies! (as well as your own folding camp chairs or blankets as seating in the courtyard is somewhat sparse).

Now, here in the South we like homemade cookies... not store bought. So, with that in mind, we're taking a giant leap of faith here by inviting the teams who have one or more baker in the family with a killer cookie recipie to bring a small batch of those tasty morsals to the social. Mind you, there's no expectation that everyone should bring a dozen as I'm not sure what we'd do with nearly 1,000 cookies. However, as we said, we here in the South like homemade cookies and we'd rather savor one or two REALLY GOOD cookies than graze on Oreo's or Chips Ahoy . So, our goal is to attract enough bakers to have about 320 homemade cookies on hand... which works out to about a dozen cookies from 1 out of every 3 teams who'll be at the rally.

So, in summary....

- Bring yourselves, bring something to sit on, and if you like to bake and have a great cookie recipie bring along a dozen or two in a disposable or marked container.
