Route Profiles Explained
Finish out the Rally with a beautiful ride in the shadow of Signal Mountain. We'll head North from the Chattanoogan this time towards the town of Dayton. For those who have ridden the 3 State / 3 Mountain Challenge, you'll have a feeling of deja vu as we head up the short but somewhat steepish climb to the Stringer's Ridge tunnel on Cherokee St. and then enjoy the long descent on Dayton Boulevard to a left on Signal Mtn Blvd. However, unlike the 3S/3M, we'll turn right before crossing the river and enjoy what could only be characterized as an idyllic Sunday morning club ride as we meander through suburban, then rural neighborhoods enjoying a nice mix of mild climbs, rolling hills, and even a few flat sections of roadway before heading back in on some of the same roads... but with an entirely different look and feel. We'll return to Chattanooga through the town of Red Bank where, at the 27 mile mark, you're invited to stop at the Red Bank Gallery for a cool drink
and explore their collections, including a special exhibit by Eric Strauss -- brother to GTR co-director Roger Strauss -- entitled, Wild Ride: Artistic Lessons of Nature. After the stop we'll make our final climb of the rally, heading up and over the ridge that will take us back down to the Tennessee River via some of the older parts of North Chattanooga. You'll be able to stop by for another Clumpie's Ice Cream on your way to the hotel and enjoy one more ride across the lovely Walnut Street walking bridge which, by the way, is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world.
Short option: 20 miles (or less) along Chattanooga's Tennessee Riverwalk
For those looking to take an easy spin on Sunday morning we invite you to return to the Tennessee Riverpark where you can enjoy the center piece of Chattanooga's greenway system, the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a 12 mile greenway that runs from our Saturday lunch spot in Coolidge Park, south across the Walnut Street Bridge, then northeast through the Bluff View Art District, past the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, by the industrial plants of Amnicola Highway, through the Amnicola Marsh, and terminates at the Chickamauga Dam. The Riverpark and all its associated destinations have been characterized as some of the most beloved outdoor spaces in Chattanooga. You can tailor your distance by riding as far on this out-and-back route as you'd like.
