Route Profiles Please note that I have attempted to normalize the elevation profiles by adjusting the vertical and horizontal scales such that you are presented with an apples-to-apples comparison of the different routes being offered at STR.
As with any topo / elevation profile program, the vertical scale is significantly skewed since vertical feet as depicted represents a scale of 2,000 feet whereas the horizontal or linear distance represents 56 miles. As a result ant hills are transformed into what appear to be mountains and mountains appear to be, well, just down right intimidating.
Therefore, flat routes with gradual elevation changes will look look hilly even though they aren't. Also, with respect to elevation gain, most topographical mapping programs don't take into account things like bridges over rivers or ravines so the total elevation change is a bit exaggerated compared to the reality of riding on a paved road.
However, make no mistake about it: the King of the Mountain (KOM) options are indeed challenging.
