My Royal EX5 digial postal scale & three (3) spare Velocity Deep-V Rims ![]() |
|
My Royal EX5 digial postal scale w/1000 gram weight used to verify calibration Note: This scale is very accurate. My Ultimate Alpine varies by +/- 5%, e.g., 1000 gram weight can register anywhere from 980 grams to 1010 grams.

Rim #1: 577 grams Rim specs: 36h x 700c w/machined sidewalls in Ti Gray finish. This is one of two rims purchased as spares within the last year. They have never been used and were removed from the shrink-wrap just for this weight check. Note: The scale was set to tare weight with the roll of electrician's tape (40 grams) sitting on the scale. The weight reflectd is that of the rim.

Rim #3: 576 grams Rim specs: 36h x 700c w/machined sidewalls in Ti Gray finish. This rim was the original rim that came on an Erickson Travel Tandem built & delivered in Spring 2004 and that was 'dinged' by a pothole and replaced by another spare Deep-V. The only difference between this wheel and the two new spares is that the yellow Velocity decal has been removed and it is showing about 5,300 miles of rear wheel wear on a tandem that only used a rim brake for aprox. 1,300 miles: all other miles were accumulated using a rear disc brake. As best as I can recall, the spare rims that were on that tandem when it sold also weighed in the 565 - 577 gram range.
